Increase Mask Buy-in by Designing Your Own
HAVE FUN CREATING WEARABLE ART!Recommendations from scientists are clear: for those of us who can safely do so, we should all be wearing a mask when we’re around any person we don’t live with. Many kids are adapting gracefully to mask-wearing, but for those who aren’t yet, “decorating” their mask may help them feel more comfortable or even excited to wear it — just like parents of picky eaters () find that kids are sometimes more willing to try a new food if they helped prepare it.
Even if your kid is all-in with face masks, why not set aside some time to do a fun and creative activity together? You can wear your special masks together, and remember the good time you had decorating them.
Inspiration for Design Your Own Face Masks
Commercial and plant-based dyes will both work to add color to your mask. We like the Rit brand, and we’re also excited to try plant-based dyes (such as beets, onion skins, and spinach). When dyeing fabric, you’ll need to set the dye to that it doesn’t bleed out of the cotton the next time you wash your mask (separately at first!). Some dyes set with vinegar, others with salt. Find a trustworthy tutorial or two if you’re new to dyeing.
DRAW OR TRACE WITH MARKERS
Use fabric makers or even Sharpies to add a pattern or graphic element to your mask. You can trace your desired image by placing it behind your mask in a window, or draw freehand for something all your own! Markers are pretty straightforward — just don’t use washables if you want your art work to stick around.
We wouldn’t blame you if you wanted your mask to sparkle like your favorite leotard. Restraint is key here — don’t cover too much of the mask, or your rhinestones might interfere with breathability or washability.
