Braids, buns, and ponytails... Hair DO'S for gymnastics competitions.
Blog by Donna Levy, Destira Founder
As a mom to former gymnasts (and gymnasts still at heart), I spent hours, maybe even hundreds of them, doing braids for every gymnastics meet. It started with my three daughters, and it wasn’t very long before their teammates began to line up for me to do their braids, too! Single braids, crown braids, wrap around braids… you name it, I did it. I happily did it because not only are gymnastics competitions THE time for our gymnasts to show off their skills, they're also crucial occasions for them to look and feel their best. And what little lady doesn't feel good when her HAIR looks good? That's right; your daughter's best hairstyle for her gymnastics meet can also help her be her best gymnast by providing function as well as by boosting her confidence when it matters most. Let's talk about what that means, and then let's look at a few great hairstyle picks. 4 Hair DO's for your gymnast at competition:
- Consider the routine. If your gymnast's head will be touching the mat, does her hairstyle accommodate her forward or backward rolls? Be sure the hairstyle your daughter chooses won't interfere with her ability to do her routine well.
- Add the accessory. Scrunchies are a great asset to your gymnast's wardrobe. Make sure you add her matching scrunchie to finish off the look.
- Ensure your gymnast's hair is not a distraction. While you're selecting the right style, you should make sure your gymnast can stay focused on what matters most – her gymnastics skills. So choose a style that is comfortable for your gymnast. If she will be distracted by a tight braid, go with a classic bun.
- Check its staying power. Is her scrunchie securely tightened? Will the hairstyle endure the power of the routine? Let your gymnast practice with her competition day hairstyle a few times to ensure it’s the one for her.
Honestly, there are so many great hairstyles out there for your gymnast to peruse. With a quick Google or Pinterest search, you're sure to find the one to wow the crowd at this year's gymnastics competition (and even tutorials to help you get it done). Just be sure to keep my four Hair DO's in mind, and you can't go wrong. Above all, savor the time with your special gymnast, and give yourself a pat on the back for helping her feel confident. Best wishes this competition season!
